Description
This rifle is called “New Model 1859 Military Rifle” manufactured by the Sharps’ Rifle Manufacturing Company between 1859 and 1862. The key features which make it a military as opposed to a civilian model are increased proportion of the parts (such as the lock and breech mechanism) and the addition of sling swivels and a bayonet lug. The proportions were increased to make the arm more durable under heavy use.
