Description
Gunpowder thermometers were manufactured during WWI according to US Government specifications. The thermometers were used to measure the temperature of gunpowder during storage. If the gunpowder got too hot it needed to be cooled down to avoid explosions. They had to be six feet long, for use in the deep storage casks. Of the 20,000 originally manufactured, less than 300 remain.
