Frances Gabe's Self-Cleaning House was patented on January 31, 1984 as a Self-Cleaning Building Construction. Included in the patent was more than 60 separate inventions including this one for a plastic book protector.

According to Gabe: "Books can be left anywhere one chooses, if the Gage shield is on them. There are covers that fit over books and come together in the center of the pages and are sealed around the back upon closure of the book. They are very easy to open and close."
