Description
One of the earliest fans in the collection, this French fan which dates between 1808 and 1811 is mounted in an elaborate presentation case. This light and delicate design was typical of French Empire Style.

Presentation cases were made not only to preserve the fan but also to acknowledge who had owned it. In this case, it was owned by Anna Van Dyke (1795-1811) , Mary V. du Pont (1826-1909) and Greta du Pont Barksdale (1891-1963). Treasured family heirlooms like these were frequently handed down throughout the generations.
