Description
Powder flasks were made in a variety of different shapes and sizes. This flask is of the fairly common flask type known as “violin shaped.” As the name suggests, these flasks are shaped like violins and were formed in specialty dies. Most violin-shaped flasks were manufactured by companies in Sheffield, England, such as this flask by G. & J. W. Hawksley. Violin-shaped flasks were typically decorated with either foliage motifs or geometric designs.
Gunpowder was sold in bulk and gunpowder flasks were used to carry gunpowder when out in the field.
