Description
Powder flasks were made in a variety of shapes and sizes. Some shapes were associated with certain areas. Violin-shaped flasks like this were mainly manufactured in and around Sheffield, England, although the design was later borrowed by a small number of American companies. G. & J. W. Hawksley was particularly well-known for their variety of violin-shaped items. These flasks were usually decorated with either foliage or geometric designs and sometimes featured a decorative panel above the base. The decorative panel on this flask features hunting imagery that was common on French powder flasks at the time.
Gunpowder was sold in bulk and gunpowder flasks were used to carry gunpowder when out in the field.
