John and Joseph Beam's patent was intended "to produce very pure spirits, and to utilize as much as possible the heat necessary to carry on the distillation. These objects are accomplished by producing several evaporations and condensations, or partial condensations, within the body of the still, and by using the heat from the condensed vapors to heat up the fresh mash or beer and the portions partially distilled."
