Description
In his patent application, Sargent explained the reasons for his
improvements: “The great advantage of this change is, that
when desirable, the lock-work can be set so that, if one lock gets
out of order, the other will unlock the bolt-work; or so that, if
different persons hold the two keys of the locks set on different
combinations, the bolt-work cannot be open till those two persons
come together. This is of special value for banks whereas burglars
sometimes force the single holder of the combination to proceed
to the bank and unlock the vault. It also prevents any one person
from access to the safe, by forcing two people to meet to open
it, and thus prevents robbery from either holder (of the keys).” (Patent Number 85,246)
