Hersee's patent "consists in forming the top and bottom of a slate-frame of thin metal bent in tube form, making a receptacle for pencils, &c., fastened at the four corners of the slate, by means of leather straps, &c...." This makes it "a superior slate for use in schools, academies, and other places, as well as for a business-slate." (Patent Number 99,187)
