Gilles and Wendell's patent "consists in providing a hinge, adapted to a shoulder, occupying but little space, made easily adjustable by the hand, so that the teacher, pupil, or any person, can easily and readily let down the table-leaf and raise and fasten the same again." (Patent Number 85,924)
