Mallory's patent facilitates "the speedy representation of the successive acts of scenes of a play by means of what are called 'double stages', upon one of which the scene next to appear may be set while the proceeding is being given." This is done "by constructing two or more complete movable stages, side by side on the same plane, and mounting them on cannon balls, or with such appliances as admit of their ready removal sidewise, or forward and back, in tracks provided for such transit."
