Schmitt's patent "relates to a new sofa-bed which is so arranged that the sofa-lining will not be occupied for supporting the bed, and that the length of sofa will constitute the breath of the bed. The invention consists, chiefly, in the use of a hollow or double back on the sofa, within which part of the mattress is concealed, and which, when extended, will form part of the bed-bottom, and also the head-board of the bed."
