Weston's patent makes improvements to two of his earlier patents - Number 75,227 (March 3, 1868) and Number 98,000 (December 14, 1869).

The objectives of this hoist related patent was to render his earlier "patent devices available in combination with a spur-pinion or train of gearing for driving the said pinion or gearing in either direction..." (Patent Number 217,032)
