Metcalfe at the time of his patent was "a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Belfast, in the county of Antrim, Ireland". His patent "relates to ventilating devices, and particularly to propellers or blowers for use in ventilating buildings or compartments therein..." This is an improvement of his patent number 4,474 which was received in Great Britain on February 28, 1896. (Patent Number 660,582)
