James and Robert McCoy's patent provides "a convenient chute for loading cattle which can be readily adjusted to load the cattle and then replaced or thrown out of the range of the cars, the same being cheaply and substantially made..." The intended use is for loading cattle onto a railway car. (Patent Number 221,931)
