Pierce's patent objective "is to hold a lamp, and carry it about the house and out of doors, instead of a lantern; and it consists in a bottom piece for the lamp to stand on and a wire running up outside, with a handle at the top to carry it by, and a shade on its top." (Patent Number 160,465)
