Bartlett's patent "consists in so arranging and attaching one of the horns of the side-saddle upon and to its tree or frame that is can be dropped down into such a position as to allow the rider to mount or dismount with the greatest facility and ease and without the least danger of the skirts becoming caught upon such horn, which, with the side-saddles now in common use, oftentimes endangers not only the limbs but the life of the rider."
