Smith and Cheever's invention consists "in an adjustable plate, provided with braces having transverse lugs or ears working in slots or rabbets formed in the under edge of the bottom-plate, to which bottom-plate is attached at right angles thereto, forming the end of the file. The adjustable plate slides over the bottom plate, and holds the papers against the end-plate, and is held in position by means of the transverse lugs or cars, which catch against the under side of the bottom-plate..." (Patent Number 76,834)
