Description
Shell and bush motifs were some of the most popular flask designs of the nineteenth century. Makers first began to produce these items in the mid-1800s and their popularity continued until the end of the century. The maker of this flask, John Matthewman, began manufacturing powder flasks just as the shell and bush design took off in popularity. This flask was likely a very stylish and desirable consumer item upon its production. All major European and American flask makers produced variations of this design.
Gunpowder was sold in bulk and gunpowder flasks were used to carry gunpowder when out in the field.
