Description
Nicholas and Bly’s artificial leg was to improve upon the old form of pin or bolt joint which “…attached to the leg in a firm and solid manner and any side jerk – as for instance that produced by stepping upon an inequality in the surface of the ground produces a severe shock...” to the wearer. Their improvement consisted of “…an improved joint which may in the artificial limb be substituted for any natural joints in the natural limb, and by which the elasticity and ease of motion of the limb is greatly increased.” (Patent Number 17,888)
