Canston's patent is an improvement to his patent #185,216 for a hydraulic-mining apparatus issued on Dec. 12, 1876. In addition to an improved hydraulic-current elevator and mining-sluice, he also "arranged a wasteway... which...can draw off from the flume or sluice a portion of the water after it has been utilized for raising the tailings or earthy matter, and conduct it back into the tail of the machine, where it can be reused as a diluent for the new matter which enters the conductor-pipe."
