Reynolds's patent improvements include the "double electro-magnet, or two electro-magnets, placed in a helix or helices, with their like poles near each other, and attachment to armature or armature-bar of common relay, so that their repulsion will counteract, or nearly counteract, the attraction of armature of common relay to its own magnet." (Patent Number 82,639)
