Smith's furnace "belongs to that class which converts fuel into heat for the purpose of warming and ventilating buildings; and my invention consists, first, in the use of a number of deflecting-plates, to bring the moving currents of air in contact with the radiating surface of the furnace, second, in forming the said radiating surface with a series of corrugations transverse to the direction of the moving currents of air and, third, in the manner of arranging the air chamber or reservoir at the top of the furnace, and introducing the hot-air pipes thereto."
