Description
The firm of G. & J. W. Hawksley was one of the more-creative powder flask manufacturers of the nineteenth century. The Sheffield business manufactured flasks in a wide range of shapes, sizes, and patterns. This is an example of a Hawksley “pinecone” flask. The pinecone design was unique to flasks made by Hawksley, likely because of the finely carved die that was required to form such an intricate pattern. G. & J. W. Hawksley was one of the most successful flask manufacturers of its day.

Gunpowder was sold in bulk and gunpowder flasks were used to carry gunpowder when out in the field.
