Description
Although the number of powder flasks made from horn decreased sharply during the 1800s, they were never entirely replaced by metal flasks. A number of makers, such as Michel Boche marketed horn flasks as high-end luxury items during the nineteenth century. This is a finely finished Boche horn flask equipped with modern brass amenities. An item like this was sold as a relatively expensive alternative to Boche’s usual selection of metal flasks. Horn flasks like this were typically only sold by high-end manufacturers like Boche that had the skills and materials needed to craft items from both horn and metal.

Gunpowder was sold in bulk and gunpowder flasks were used to carry gunpowder when out in the field.
